The Asturian connection. Cathedral of Monopoli
We could also say..."the Spanish connection". What a surprising thing for an Spanish tourist to find in the cathedral of Monopoli a wonderful baroque painting showing what happened centuries before in the remote kingdom of Asturias (at the origins of the present nation of Spain).
The battle of Clavijo (9th century) not only means the victory of the reconquest in the Iberian peninsula but also the origin of the Saint James of Compostela (the moorslayer / ammazzamori) legend.
Don´t miss it. The Italian baroque painting from Carlo Rosa is waiting for you at the third chapel (right hand side) in the cathedral.
